Local Pizzeria Tutta Bella ranks the 100 fastest-growing inner city businesses in America

Seattle, Washington — Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria achieved a place on the 2011 Inner City 100, a ranking of the fastest-growing inner city businesses located in America’s inner cities, as selected by Fortune magazine and the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC). The ICIC 100 recognizes the fastest growing urban companies through a program developed 13 years ago to highlight the importance of creating healthy inner city economies in order to develop strong communities. Tutta Bella received a #43 ranking and was the highest ranking restaurant.

Since opening its flagship Columbia City restaurant in 2004, the business has expanded to four Seattle area locations (Stone Way, South Lake Union and Issaquah) with 180 employees and generated nearly ten million dollars in revenues for 2010. Deeply involved in revitalizing the historic Columbia City district, Fugere points out that it is now a vibrant community, buzzing with activity. His vision has always been one of impacting positively the environment and the neighborhood in which each Tutta Bella operates.

This year’s Inner City 100 was chosen from more than 2,000 solicited nominations and also included such companies as Pandora Internet Radio and Angie’s List. ICIC uses data to prove that not only can companies thrive in inner cities, but there are competitive advantages of doing business there with astonishing results. From 1999 – 2010, the 607 Inner City 100 companies that have made the list are responsible for creating almost 72,000 new jobs, employing nearly 100,000 people (of which 40 percent are inner-city residents), having an average compound annual growth rate of 50% and generating approximately $2.3 billion in total sales per year.

The program is led by some of today’s most creative entrepreneurs and sponsors such as Bank of America, Chevron, The Staples Foundation for Learning and Goldman Sachs. Tutta Bella founder Joe Fugere joined other Inner City 100 business owners at a summit in Boston for a two-day event featuring seminars for the company CEOs at Harvard Business School, where they participated in a lecture and case study analysis presented by two Harvard Business School professors, Deepak Malhotra and Linda Hill, as well as a gala awards dinner that historically draws more than 700 guests. With success that has inspired political and business leaders, academics and the media, the Inner City 100 has become a national movement.
